DIY: Worm Bin

Worm bins are the only feasible method of indoor composting for apartment dwellers and compost that comes out of a worm bin is some of the BEST you can get. Properly kept a worm bin should never smell or attract flies, and the entire process of composting food scraps to compost should take approx 3 months. You can buy fancy worm bins online but making your own is much less expensive and more fun!

Tips for Vermiculture:

1. Worms will attempt to find a new home if your bin doesn’t have the right moisture balance. If it is too wet add dry news paper. If it is too dry mist it with a spray bottle.
2. Worms cannot survive outside of the bin and will not get far if they decide to venture out on their own, so don’t worry, you wont find them in your laundry!
3. Don’t overwhelm your worms.. only feed them what they can eat in a week (or else they will become upset and may decide to move out).
