5 steps to the perfect shave for dandy gentlemen

1. PREP: Wet your face with warm water! One of the most important steps in achieving the perfect shave is to make sure you get plenty of warm water on your face, this will soften beard hair and open pores. If possible, always shave after you step out of the shower or apply a moistened hot (warm) towel to your face for a few minutes before shaving.

2. PRE-SHAVE: Lightly rub our pre-shave formula onto your face and neck prior to applying shaving cream. This step will help protect your skin by allowing the razor to glide over your skin, reducing the chance of nicks, cuts, and razor burn.

3. LATHER UP: With a quality shaving brush or your fingers, gently massage our lubricating shave cream onto your face and neck. This step will help the beard hair to stand up away from the skin resulting in a closer more comfortable shave.

4. THE BATTLE OF THE BLADE: Always use a sharp blade, there is nothing worse than dragging a cold piece of dull steel across your face! Shave in the direction of your beard growth (with the grain) Shaving against the grain can lead to irritation and ingrown hairs. If you dare to get as smooth as possible, go for a second pass against the grain this time using light pressure and short strokes. Always rinse the blade under hot water before you start shaving, and every couple of strokes during your shave. Rinse face with cold water and pat dry, not rub dry, pat dry.

5. PROTECT: Apply our light non greasy non oily soothing after shave lotion. This lotion will nourish while protecting your newly shaven skin.

Following these 5 simple steps should help you to achieve the perfect shave. Never ever rush your shave, it’s the only face you got so take your time and enjoy this manly ritual!

Thanks to our friends at Crown Shaving Co. for these tips. We will be carrying a limited selection of Crown Shaving Co. grooming products at our LOCO for LOCAL shop on Dec 8th-11th! So come by early to ensure all the men in your life are well groomed and looking their best for the holidays.

Lauren is one of the founders of The About Face Collective, and if you are a member of our Facebook Page you may remember some photo’s I posted from their stop-motion video in the making a couple of weeks ago. The About Face is a Toronto-based grassroots arts and environmental collective. They collaborate with and connect artists, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, organizations and community members seeking to work collectively and integrate approaches to urban sustainability.

holiday wish list: Cuchara necklaces for boys and girls! As you may have noticed we have been hopping on the pop up shoppe train and at each event we love to work with our friend Woo. Why you ask?! Well she always keeps it fresh with new and exciting jewels for just about anyone, and she always brings it on the dance floor at our launch parties!

When we first started doing these pop pop shopps Woo started out making dreamcatcher necklacesweb bracelets and necklaces out of recycled teaspoons. These days she has been whipping up amazing studded bracelets, bullet necklaces and other men’s necklaces, as well as some new choker and longer stone necklaces.

Woo’s stuff always flies out the door at our events and most of her pieces are one of a kind as she crafts them all by hand. So come get some at LOCO for LOCAL!

What’s fermenting over at 124 Ossington, well a brand new brewery is taking local craft-brewed beer to a new level.

With the help of some volunteers Bellwood’s Brewery planted hops in 8 separate locations within Toronto to test the viability of growing hops right in the city. By exploring the use of different settings, greening urban spaces and creating local partnerships with the rest of the community Bellwood’s Brewery is literally growing their business one roof at a time. To learn more about the City Hops project check out the Global Toronto video

Bellwood’s Brewery is a new venture that not only promises to bring local brews to the neighbourhood they will also have a picnic-style cafe and retail shop (that will be open 364 days a year!). Not only will you be able to nosh on delish dishes made in collaboration with local chefs but… next Canada Day when the brews run dry, you can bike on down to Bellwood’s and return a hero with cold beers in hand!

We are very excited to announce that the fellow’s over at Bellwood’s will be donating 3 limited edition posters to be given away at our holiday pop up shop. The letterpress posters were made in collaboration with Trip Press Print. Make sure you come by LOCO for LOCAL on December 8th-11th and enter your name for a chance to win a little piece of Bloordale history! The paper was found in the bottom of the original press so it is at least 60 years old.

ChocoSol Traders is about “community, social enterprise, and traditional methods.”

On Wednesday we were invited to spend the day wrapping chocolates at and learning about the sustainable and slow philosophy.

The proprietor Michael first learned about the qualities of various native cacao beans and traditional processes of grinding and preparation while in Mexico. ChocoSol uses those same methods, including stone-grinding its fair trade beans and also harnessing pedal-power.

ChocoSol’s chocolate bars and hot chocolate are available to purchase direct from their kitchen, from local farmer’s markets and on Dec 8-11th at our L O C O for L O C A L (holiday pop up shop) at Naco Gallery.

The team at ChocoSol tries to be as environmentally friendly as possible, all of their packaging is 100% biodegradable and they are striving to create the greenest kitchen in the city. They are attempting to create a zero-waste kitchen which also produces other products such as tortillas and other baked goods.
