Our friend Danielle is script writer, story teller and an all-around idiot. She loves wearing sweatpants, lives for the proper use of a semicolon and can eat an entire party-size bag of dill pickle chips in one sitting (her words not ours :)

She recently started a greeting card brand, appropriately called “i love  you, rudely”. Each card says all the things you want to, but can’t unless you’re drunk. So save yourself a drink and check out her etsy store!

Gangsters, they’re just like us! Check these flicks originally taken for LIFE magazine, portraying Brooklyn-born, Los Angles based gangster Mickey and LaVonne Cohen in their natural environment. Cohen served as the real-life inspiration for Sean Penn’s character in the film Gangster Squad.

Thanks to LIFE and Quite Continental for this.

This is a pretty inspiring story of a repurposed/salvaged designer named Ariele Alasko from Brooklyn who drove across the US in a 16 foot truck and stopping at abandoned, diners, farms, junk stores and other decrepit places along the way. After the trip she ended up in California with a truck of old materials to build a restaurant entirely from scratch.

Over six months she built everything herself from lamp fixtures, cutlery drawers, tables, and more. Check out her blog Brooklyn to West to see more of her work.

#KeithHaring: 1978–1982 on exhibition fromMarch 16–July 8 at the Brooklyn Museum.
The exhibition chronicles the period in Haring’s career from his arrival in New York City through the years when he started his studio practice and began making public and political art on the city streets. Immersing himself in New York’s downtown culture, he quickly became a fixture on the artistic scene, befriending other artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, as well as many of the most innovative cultural figures of the period. The critical role that these relationships played in Haring’s development as a public artist and facilitator of group exhibitions and performances is also explored.
Thanks to the Brooklyn Museum for this, you can read more here.
Can’t wait to check this out next time we are in New York! Make sure you follow the Keith Haring Foundation’s tumblr as they will be posting a new page from Keith’s diary every day.

Check out this rad brand from Brooklyn called Fleabags. The ALICE bag is from their Spring/Summer 2012 campaign and was made with recycled fishing net. These bootstrapping ladies were inspired by an NPR story about a fisherman who was affected by the BP oil spill and had a bunch of excess net he couldn’t use, so the girls tracked him down and voila the ALICE bag was born.
MOTTO: Fleabags strives to create products that are as green as possible while maintaining high quality and covetable design. Fleabags are made with organic and vintage materials, vegetable-tanned and re-purposed leathers, and other parts all sourced in the USA. All silkscreens use water-based ink. Fleabags are made in the USA with good old-fashioned sewing.
Thanks to Refinery29 for this tip.

#DIY: Tune Up Your Bicycle

As it is now June (woww where did 2011 go!) and in honour of bike month, here is a video to help you get your bike back in action. This week ETSY is teaching the ABC’s of tuning your bike are no different. We caught up with Brooklyn’s own Susan Lindell at Dumbo’s Recycle-A-Bicycle; there, multi-tool in hand, she showed us the five things you need to do to get your bike ready to ride.

If you’ve been on the fence of this pedaling renaissance, now’s the time to get your gears in motion. As Susan says, “It’s really cheap, good for your mental health, and it’s a lot of fun.” Not to mention that you’ll be helping yourself, your community, and the planet in a way that you never could otherwise, even if you were driving a 2011 Toyota Prius.

To learn more about the ABC Quick Check and find inspiration for biking, check out theLeague of American Bicyclists.

A Glimpse into Norman Mailers “Nautical Adventureland”

The New York Times has presented a look into the last home of Norman Mailer, a property many of us can only drool over by being described as a cross between a “Victorian parlor and the cabin of a sailing yacht.” The late Mr Mailer and his wife lived in this fourth-floor apartment in Brooklyn Heights which is said to have been turned into into a “nautical adventureland” by the family. Now following his death, Mailers nine children are now selling the apartment for an asking price of $2.5 million. The home not only housed the family but would play host to some amazing parties such as the ones in the 1970s attended by John Lennon, Woody Allen and Bob Dylan. The home boasting an amazing view which was very much enjoyed by Mailer as he “liked a view when he was writing.”
